Barbel baits

posted Feb 01, 2011 12:00:59 by AndyWareham
Hi Guys.Just testing the water with this and would like your opinions.

I'm being pestered by fishing buddies and old customers to get back into the bait making game, I used to design baits for a couple of now defunct bait companies, the most successful of which was a company called Eurotec which did rather well with both Carp and Barbel baits. We used to make Tref West's Barbel pastes and had several noted Barbel anglers on our books, Chris Ponsford, Dave Mason to name a couple.

I haven't made commercially for about 4 years but have carried on developing baits for my own and close friends use with a good deal of success. I now have a few baits that I am more than happy with, are easy to use and very different to anything else on the market.

Firstly I have the original Eurotec stick and method mix (S&M mix). This is a high fishmeal and crustacean ground bait and is hugely versatile and massively attractive it was originally designed as a PVA stick mix but because it binds so well it doubles up as a cracking method mix, after a bit of experimenting we found that it will hold loads of particles which makes it an excellent long range ground bait mix, it can be mixed with pellets and adds extra attraction to PVA bag or spod mixes, some of my mates have mixed up as a slop and used it as a spod mix which leaves a massive cloud of food signals yet very little in the way of food.

Dips. I have always messed about with dips and soaks as a means of adding extra attraction. I now have a minamino based dip that is so thick you could almost cut it with a knife, it sticks to a bait like S**t to a blanket yet slowly dissolves and sends masses of attraction into the water over a long period of time. The only complaint I've had is that it's to sticky, it is messy stuff but works well.

Paste mix. This is just food again hugely attractive, very high fish meal content and stinks to high heaven, the real beauty of this mix is that you take the powder with you and mix it on the bank with water and it makes a cracking smooth easy to use paste, you can put it of a hook, wrap it round a boilie or a pellet and it dissolves slowly leaking loads of smell into the water.

What I'm considering doing is selling the bait via agents, I don't want the aggro of sending a kilo here and a kilo there the P&P cost make the bait expensive and you end up being a busy idiot with no time to yourself, so what I'm thinking if I can get a few anglers who want to make a bit of extra money for themselves, the agents buy in bulk at trade price and then sell it on, on the bank, car boot, ebay, down the pub or where ever, There would be a website and Facebook page with agents contact details etc. I would also get promotional stuff done, send bait to mags and get reviews done by well known anglers etc etc.

OK, so tell me what you think and ask any questions.

cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,
Sorry mate, been at work. It sounds very interseting! As you know I'm a novice bait maker myself and I find the subject fascinating. Any help I can give you just let me know.
Cheers

Cheers Tim.

I've been in touch with James Harrison at Free spool magazine and he is going to do some reviews of the baits, so it's all moving along.....

If you get any reviews or would like me to do one (some freebies required I'm afraid!) then I will put a review on the review page on here and the facebook page. All very exciting and as I hope you are aware I'm all for helping small producers like yourself and Andy (cagefeeders.com). Keep me up to date!
Cheers

Hi Andy,
hope you well? I was just looking on the hinders site for some sort of paste mix for when I take groups out fishing in the summer. Then I remembered you were talking about getting back to making some baits. What I'm after is a bait to match Hinders elips pellets, so sort of halibutish? Or a neutral basemix to add various JB addatives/flavours. Are you still planning to start creating or do you have any recommendations?
Cheers

Hi Tim. I'm well thanks, hope you are to.

I'm still being badgered to get back into the bait making game, I've been playing with some bits n pieces, mainly liquid attractors and mineral supplements... gonna try some of it on the cotswold water park pond pigs in the next few weeks with a bit of luck.

Your going to be using elipse pellets? and want a paste mix to complement them? I can make a paste using halibut pellet powder so a halibutish paste is no problem, I can make a good usable paste from pretty much anything, brickdust if you want lol....

What additives are you thinking of using? I'll be honest with you most of them are crap, expensive crap at that, mainly designed to catch the angler and create income for the bait companies, you don't need things like betaine or chemical flavours
I've experimented with pretty much anything and everything available and very little of it makes any difference, apart from increase the price of the bait. I have not used chemical flavours in baits for over 20 years and can't see me ever needing to use them in a bait again.

Let me know exactly what your after and I'll see what I can do.

Hiya mate.
I've got frost and flood, spectrum, yeast extract, cream something and some nutrabaits bits. I'm trying to make something that nobody else will have anything like. You know, so its recognised as safe compared to pellets. Thats why I'm thinking more confectionary than savoury.

As regards bait for the bods who I take out, something that will catch instantly, well as near as possible, cause I take people for 1-7 days so won't have time to get fish used to a specific bait.

cheers
